Recommendations For Correct Wheel Speeds

Typical maximum operating speed by bond types are as follows:

Metal Bond Cut-off (Steel Center)
Type 1A1R and type 1A1RSS....................................................
16,000 SFPM

Metal Bond (All Other)...............................................................
12,000 SFPM

Nickel Plated.............................................................................
12,000 SFPM

Resin Bond................................................................................
9,500 SFPM

The above wheel speeds are the maximum safe speeds and not necessarily the most efficient.  Superabrasive wheels operate most effectively at speeds lower than the maximum.  

The following are general recommendations:

Metal Bond Cut-Off....................................................................
7,000 to 10,000 SFPM

Metal Bond (All Other)...............................................................
5,500 to 6,500 SFPM

Nickel Plated.............................................................................
9,000 to 12,000 SFPM

Resin Bond................................................................................
5,500 to 6,500 SFPM
But as high as 9,500 SFPM on some machines and operations.

For your convienience, refer to the
last page in our catalog which contains a table that facilitates conversion of SFPM to revolutions per minute for various wheel diameters.  Or the following formula may be used to quickly calculate SFPM  (Surface Feet Per Minute) :

                  WHEEL SPEED in RPM  x  WHEEL DIAMETER in INCHES  x  .262 = SFPM
